A water separator is used in industrial compressed air systems to remove bulk liquid contamination. Bulk liquids are large water droplets, as opposed to fine mist or aerosol. (Coalescing filters are used to remove oil mist.)  Install the water separator following an after-cooler or at the outlet of the wet air receiver tank.

Water separators use a mix of separation technologies including centrifugal separation. A centrifugal separator (sometimes called a cyclone separator or cyclonic separator) has an internal device that causes compressed air to spin. This forces water droplets to fall to the bottom of the separator. Liquid is then purged from the air system with an automatic drain valve.
