230V Air Dryer for Compressed Air – Yes, They Exist!

Let me guess.  You’re looking for a compressed air dryer that uses a 230V power supply, just like your air compressor. The 230V power is right there and you would prefer not to run a low voltage line just for the air dryer.

Well there is good news and bad news. Let’s start with the bad news.

No manufacturer that I know of offer a 230V refrigerated air dryer rated for a flow below 70 CFM, and most refrigerated air dryer manufacturers begin offering 230V units at around 100 CFM, a flow rating that roughly corresponds to a 20 horsepower air compressor.  So if your facility uses a 5 to 15 HP air compressor and you must have a refrigerated air dryer, you will almost certainly need to run 115V power to the refrigerated dryer.

Now for the good news.

Heatless desiccant dryers are readily available in with 230V controls, even in very small sizes.  However, these  desiccant dryers are not for every shop.  Heatless desiccant dryers deliver ultra-high purity air and are usually used in laboratories, instrument air systems, and in air systems subject to freezing ambient temperatures.  Heatless dryers require a continuous purge of compressed air, which means a relatively high cost of operation.

Another option you have to avoid running 115V is using a deliquescent dryer. These dryers use no electrical power at all. Proper pre-cooling and drain automation are important for these dryers.
